Possible Slogan for the Read-a-Thon

We'll need a slogan for the read-a-thon. The top contender at this point comes from Judy and Zoƫ. It is... Read the world, feed the world. It is catchy and quickly communicates the linked core ideas of the effort -- to connect learning about other cultures to actually improving the lives of others.

What are other possible slogans for the effort?

MEETING NOTES: Initial Kick-Off Meeting

Children and parents met for the initial planning meeting. After watching an overview of the purposes and work of Heifer International, we discussed how best to approach staging a school-wide fund-raiser this year. We made the following decisions:

  • to focus initial efforts on getting the word out about the group and fundraiser around the school (postings, blog, word-of-mouth)
  • to stage the fund-raiser, a Read to Feed read-a-thon, early in 2008
  • to encourage participating children and families to read about cultures from other parts of the world

MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT: Global Action After-School Group at Thornton Creek School

Thursday, November 1st, 3:15 - 4:15 in the Library

An after-school group focused on learning and taking action about global issues is being launched at Thornton Creek! Our primary activity, at least initially, will be to plan and conduct a fund-raising effort over the course of the school year associated with the well-known Read-to-Feed Program associated with Heifer International (see http://www.readtofeed.org/ to learn more). By getting sponsors for books they read, our children will raise money to buy livestock for struggling families in other parts of the world who need an ongoing source of income.

We invite all interested children and parents to join the group (and welcome any teacher input). At our first meeting we will discuss the program and how we might implement it school-wide, with an emphasis on having the kids design the details. We’ll also watch a video that will introduce us to families benefiting from the program. Please attend the kick-off meeting or email ruhabell@yahoo.com to learn more about the effort.
